Google Business Profile for Doctors: The Field-by-Field Setup That Ranks

Your Google Business Profile generates more patient calls than your website — yet most doctors set it up once and never touch it. The field-by-field walkthrough that turns it into your best asset.

For most practices we audit, the Google Business Profile — not the website — is the top source of patient calls. It is also, almost always, half-empty: set up years ago, wrong timings, four photos, categories chosen in ten seconds.

This is the field-by-field setup we run in every engagement. Twenty minutes of focused work, then fifteen minutes a week — that is the entire cost of your highest-converting asset.

Before anything: own the login

Verify that you — not a former agency, not an ex-employee — control the profile. We once spent six weeks recovering a hospital profile a vendor had locked for four years (that story here). If you cannot log in today, fixing that is step zero — everything else waits.

Field 1: name — exactly, boringly, your name

"Dr. Anita Sharma — Skin Clinic" if that is the registered name. Not "Best Dermatologist Delhi | Dr. Anita Sharma". Keyword-stuffed names are the most common suspension trigger in healthcare — and a suspension costs you weeks of invisibility while recovery crawls.

Field 2: categories — the ranking decision you make once

Primary category matches how patients search for you ("Dermatologist", "Dental clinic", "IVF centre"), secondaries cover the rest of what you do. Be precise: "Doctor" as a primary is a wasted slot. This single field decides which searches you are even eligible to appear for.

Field 3: services — one entry per money treatment

Add every consultation and procedure as its own service with a two-line real description (and honest price ranges where you are comfortable). Google matches queries to service entries literally — a missing "root canal" service is a missing ranking.

Field 4: photos — recency beats quality

Twenty genuine photos minimum: exterior (patients navigate by it), reception, consultation rooms, equipment, the team. Then add a few every month — a profile whose newest photo is from 2023 tells Google and patients the same story. No stock photos; patients can tell, and so can Google's vision models.

Field 5: Q&A — answer before strangers do

Anyone can answer questions on your profile — including competitors and confused patients. Seed it yourself with the ten questions your front desk hears daily (parking, insurance, timings, fees, first-visit process) and answer them as the owner. You are writing your FAQ where patients actually read it.

Field 6: reviews and posts — the living signals

Reviews are the strongest local signal and deserve their own system — steady genuine velocity, every review answered within 48 hours, never a fake (the full ethical playbook). Posts are the most under-used field: a weekly update — health tip, timing change, camp announcement — appears at the exact moment a patient is choosing. Mirror your best content there.

The 15-minute weekly routine

  • Monday: one post published, new reviews answered.
  • Check and answer any new Q&A.
  • Add 2–3 fresh photos monthly.
  • Glance at the profile's own stats: calls, direction requests, website clicks — the numbers that actually are patients.

That routine, held for a quarter, outranks competitors who "optimized" once and left. Local SEO is a habit, not a project — and it is layer two of our whole healthcare SEO system.

The signals you cannot edit

Beyond the fields, Google watches behavior: do searchers call you, request directions, click through, and come back? Those signals compound with activity — which is why the boring weekly routine outranks one-time "optimization". A profile that earns calls this week ranks better next week; visibility begets visibility.

Two myths to drop: daily posting does not directly rank you (weekly consistency is enough — review velocity matters far more), and keyword-stuffing the description does nothing (it is not a ranking field). Put that energy into services, photos and the review engine instead.
